The Beekeeping Basics for Beginners 101 Series is for people with 0-3 years of experience managing hives. Foundational topics include bee biology, colony behavior, and how to effectively and efficiently manage your hives. Learn how to use beekeeping tools in a variety of situations, and how to help your bees adapt to changing weather and seasons. Consider taking the beginner classes even if you don’t yet have hives, but want to better understand the preparation and financial commitment required for success. Our Beekeeping 101 Series includes: March 17 - BASICS 1: ANATOMY, BIOLOGY & EQUIPMENT (Understanding honey bee biology and behavior is the foundation for beekeeping management. We’ll cover the basics of biology and behavior that you’ll need to get started, plus necessary hive equipment and supplies.) April 14 - BASICS 2: WORKING WITH BEES (The basic techniques and tools required to work a live colony of honey bees safely and effectively. Covers the use & function of beekeeping tools, as well as the protocols for working through the beekeeper's calendar.) May 12 - BASICS 3: COLONY MANAGEMENT (Knowing what you are looking at, and looking for, when you open a colony of bees is only the first step to understanding what the bees need YOU to do. This class is an overview of the beekeepers’ role and tasks, as well as a basic outline for inspecting and managing your bee hives over time.) Monthly classes provide a range of seasonal experiences. This is the MOST COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM taught by a professional beekeeper in Columbus! You will not find more in-depth beekeeping classes anywhere else in central Ohio. Learn how to manage your bees competently and efficiently, and start seeing year-over-year success. This class pays for itself as your skill level goes up and your expenses come down. Class size strictly limited to 12 students for maximum HANDS-ON experience. Class takes place at the Columbus Garden School, 1350 E. Cooke Road, Columbus OH 43224. More recently, he spent 7 years as the staff apiarist at Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware, OH. Currently, Dave operates Red Beard Bees where he continues to refine, develop, and teach his beekeeper training programs and presentations both statewide and nationally.

(Refund policy for materials fee, if applicable, may vary and is included in class description.) In most cases, you can transfer your class enrollment to a friend -- just let us know! Please note, we do NOT record or distribute our online presentations.
