Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina) is a large deciduous shrub / small tree growing up to 16'H X 20'W. The velvety texture and the forking pattern of the branches are reminiscent of a deer's antlers. Staghorn sumac is THE plant for a tough, dry spot in your landscape that needs some native drama and color!

Fall foliage is brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow. The fruit of sumacs are edible, and can remain on plants from late summer through spring. According to Wikipedia, "[fruits] can be soaked and washed in cold water, strained, sweetened and made into a pink "lemonade". The shoots can be peeled and eaten raw. The fruit was found to have certain natural antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. All parts of the staghorn sumac, except the roots, can be used as both a natural dye and as a mordant. The plant is rich in tannins and can be added to other dye baths to improve light fastness. The leaves may be harvested in the summer and the bark all year round. Staghorn sumac fruit is eaten by many birds in winter.

From the Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District website, our plant source in April 2024: "Bees find spring-blooming flowers attractive, and songbirds and gamebirds alike relish fruit clusters that are borne on the female plants. Individuals grow 13-30', suckering to form thickets if allowed. Grown as ornamental for autumn color, leaves and fruits, sumacs are extremely tough plants that thrive in poor, dry soils."
