The black chokeberry shrub (Aronia melanocarpa) has grown in popularity over recent years due to its versatile edible and ornamental qualities. This beautiful, moderate-sized shrub (grows 3-6 feet tall and wider) works well in the residential landscape, especially near rain gardens or other moist areas. Our native shrub has been grown in Europe for its healthy "super-fruit" for years, and Americans are once again welcoming this prodigal child back into our gardens.
Prefers full sun/part shade and regular moisture, but these tough shrubs are adaptable to short dry periods once established. Plant may develop suckers over time which are easily pruned out during regular maintenance. Note - our black chokeberries are not cultivars, but the straight native species!
From Wikipedia: "Chokeberries are cultivated as an ornamental plant and as a food plant. The sour berries, or aronia berries, can be eaten fresh off the bush, but are more frequently processed. They can be used to make wine, jam, syrup, juice, soft spreads, tea, salsa, extracts, beer, ice cream, gummies, and tinctures. The name "chokeberry" comes from the astringency of the fruits, which create the sensation of making one's mouth pucker."
