Prunus americana, commonly called the American plum is a species native to North America from Saskatchewan and Idaho south to New Mexico, and east to Québec, Maine and Florida. This is a perfect plant for Ohio!
Grown as a large shrub or small tree, it reaches up to 15 feet. The shrub survives harsh winters, down to temperatures of -40F degrees, but has little tolerance for shade, drought, or fire. Good drainage is essential. It blooms heavily in spring and starts fruiting in summer. It is self-fertile but another plum tree blooming nearby will have a beneficial effect.
The roots are shallow, widely spread, and send up suckers. The numerous stems per plant become scaly with age. The tree has a crown width and height of 10 feet at maturity. The branches are thorny. The small white flowers with five petals occur singly or in clusters. The globular fruits are about 1 in in diameter. (Plant description gleaned from Wikipedia and other sources.)
Our American plum trees were grown out from bare root seedlings acquried at the Franklin County 2023 Plant Sale. We also have a donated American plum growing onsite at CGS -- and it's filled out astonishingly FAST. It bloomed heavily in spring 2024 and the scent was lovely, especially in the evening. We are hopeful of seeing some fruit this year -- if the birds, deer, squirrels, raccoons, ETC. don't get it first!
